Fatwā: Ruling on Double-Interment Burial

10 May 201714 Shaʻban 14381 min read

A written ruling for a UK cemetery on burying more than one person in a single grave, and the conditions the Sharīʿah attaches to it.

The Council was approached by Green Acres (Kemnal Park) Cemetery & Ceremonial Park for a formal ruling on double-interment burial — the practice of burying more than one person in a single grave, and what the Sharīʿah permits given the pressures on burial space that cemeteries in the UK now face.

The Council examined the question and issued a written fatwā in response, setting out the ruling and the conditions attached to it.
